CULTURAL TREASURES AT HOSENJI


The tomb of Narishige Yura,
Lord of Kiryu Castle

(A municipally designated historic site)

Hosenji Temple Gate

(a municipally designated cultural treasure)

Constructed of cypress wood in 1704, the gate has 3 orifices and one passageway.

 


 

Hosenji Rinzo (Rotating Sutra Repository)

(a municipally designated cultural treasure)

Constructed in 1783, the special characteristic of this building is the ease with which the entire structure can be rotated on its axis.

In addition to the sculpture of Shorindaishi enshrined on one face of the repository, 6,700 volumes of Buddhist precepts from the Early Edo Period (1679) are stored on the repository shelves.

 


 

Hosenji Bonsho (Temple Bell)

(a municipally designated cultural treasure)

Cast in 1641, this is the oldest temple bell in Kiryu and one of the oldest in Gunma Prefecture. the style is reminiscent of bells cast during

the Tenmei Period, and represents the work of two well-known artisans of the era, Fujiwara and Eda. It is, in fact, the only perfectly preserved cast bell that can be traced to the Eda family.

 

Bisyamonten,a God of Good Fortune

From long ago. this god was revered in india. The god is also sometimes referred to as Tamonten. Bisyamonten is not only the possess or the TYreasure Tower which he holds in his hand, but he is also recognized for his ability to endow one with wisdom; he is the protector of samurai; and as one of the Seven Gods of Dood Fortune , he can bestow wealth and good luck, acts as a talisman against evil, and can grant success in scholarly pursuits.
